Share with us at: pov@timesofindia.com Amid the spotlight on the Malayalam film industry following multiple allegations of sexual harassment and the release of the Hema Committee report, the joint resignation of the executive committee members of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), led by veteran actor Mohanlal, appears ill-timed. What will happen to the long-standing sexual harassment claims made by numerous women, including recent ones? It took more than five years for the contents of the Justice K Hema Committee report, exposing widespread harassment and abuse of female professionals in the Malayalam film industry, to be disclosed. This report has been praised as a significant step in combating gender exploitation, with its impact felt beyond just Kerala. The sudden resignation of the very committee responsible for addressing these issues and ensuring a safe work environment for women is a setback to the movement gaining momentum. AMMA's official statement attributes the dissolution of the committee to allegations raised by the Hema Committee. However, merely resigning raises questions about fulfilling moral responsibilities. Shouldn't justice for the victims who bravely spoke out against the perpetrators and their supporters be ensured? AMMA's 16-member committee, which includes four women, plans to form a new committee within two months to "rebuild and strengthen AMMA." There is uncertainty regarding how pending cases will be handled.During this period, the focus remains on the individuals already under investigation. The passage of two months can significantly impact a woman's quest for justice. In the meantime, some Malayalam actors have come together to support their female colleagues and push for substantial reforms and a safer work environment for all. The outcome of the Hema Committee report and how industry veterans and other stakeholders respond will influence similar movements in other parts of the country. Discussions about increasing female representation in leadership positions within film industry organizations will also be critical. Actor Shammi Thilakan emphasized the importance of passing on a healthy industry to the next generation, rather than a deteriorating one.
